How was your week?
Mine went a little something like this:
Meditation guided my steps this week. I practice meditation, but this week was more frequent throughout the day. Mindfulness has been my go-to when I need a moment to reset and release the things I can't control.
I had this 30-minute debate in my head on if I should order groceries or go get them myself from the store. The sky was dark gray, and I had already been caught in the rain and wasn't trying to again. Then I felt like I'd rather get my groceries myself and I'm only getting what's on my list. My daughter and I are making our rounds to grab what we need for dinner and then...all the lights go out in the grocery store. They're off for about 3 seconds and then come back on. A few minutes later, they're off again without a flicker.
The store goes silent, the backup power comes on with enough for some of the ceiling lights and the cash registers to work. It was over for getting anything frozen because they blocked those aisles and per usual the accountant in me is like: if all the food goes bad they'll file an insurance claim, write off the spoiled inventory then get a check for the cost of the spoilage.
As I leave the grocery store and the traffic lights were also out, the rain started again, and I get home thinking I'm about to cook. The truth is, I thought my kitchen was clean because I cleaned it up the night before but that was short-lived. I'll continue this conversation in the Mommy Moment section because I really can't make this up.
#CareerConvos™️: Keeping Your Cool When You Wanna Pop Off
I'm laughing to myself as I think about the number of times I and my fellow millennials working in corporate have said, "I'ma be professional though" after something happened at work that had us ready to unload some small words, finger pointing, and neck rolling. It's usually somebody we knew we could run circles around that found some audacity to try us today but the restraint that was required is another reason why I love us millennials so much.
On a recent episode of #CareerConvos™️ with Nikki, I addressed the topic - on video even. The conversation started with answering a community question about toxic workplaces and I felt the need to also address keeping your cool, which is often tested in toxic workplaces.
Have you heard or watched the episode? Check it out below if you haven't, it's worth the 9 minutes and watch it on 2x if you want. After you watch it, reply to this email and let me know your thoughts.
Toxic work environments permeate the ecosystem of a business. It shows in how the company treats employees, through interactions with customers, even how they pay their bills.
In these Accounting Streets
Recently the Atlanta accounting community put on an inaugural event as we hosted Okorie Ramsey for Beyond the Balance Sheet: Innovations Shaping the Future of Accounting. In case you're not familiar, Okorie just completed his term as the first Black male chairman of the AICPA - the largest accounting association. That's a big deal, and equally noteworthy are the people who came from across the country just to be there. It meant something to be in that room.
My friends at GSCPA asked me to write an article recapping the experience. I did, and also shared a personal story and my best practices for networking for success. If your network is made up of 5,000 people that you've never connected with, what's the point if you don't cultivate those relationships? So many things to think about - I thoroughly enjoyed creating that piece. It'll be published in the September issue of Current Accounts.
Speaking of GSCPA, our Atlanta chapter awarded scholarships to 3 remarkable accounting students. We do this annually in collaboration with the GSCPA Education Foundation, and it felt amazing to know we're helping these students continue their pursuit of greatness in accounting because their applications were stellar.
Mommy Moment: Come Back Later
Come back later has been the 3 words I've had to use a lot with my kids. Going back to the grocery store debacle, we got home and the kids grabbed what they wanted out the bags and left the rest on the counter. There are dishes in the sink and dishes in the dishwasher. I told them to clean up so I can cook, then it became a debate between who was doing what and who did dishes yesterday and it started to sound like Charlie Brown's Momma. I told them "Y'all come back later" to go figure out how to work as a team and because I can't deal with this nonsense in my ear. Do y'all see why now I've been spending more time in my woosah room?
